Why shadowing builds fluent speech

Shadowing — repeating speech almost as you hear it — trains the rhythm, stress and intonation of a language, not just the words. The hard part is hearing your own gaps: learners rarely notice that their pitch is flat or their timing rushed. Looping a phrase lets you drill it until it sticks, slowing it down (with the pitch preserved, so it still sounds like speech) reveals the sounds that blur at full speed, and laying your recording beside the model turns a vague impression into something you can actually see. It is the technique interpreters use to build fluency, here as a practice studio.

What can I use as a model?

Any audio or video file — a podcast clip, a movie scene, a song. You can also type a sentence and have your device speak it as the model.

Does slowing it down change the voice?

No. The slow-down uses time-stretching, so a voice stays at its natural pitch and just speaks more slowly — it does not turn deep or robotic.

How do I loop just one phrase?

Drag the two blue handles on the waveform to mark the start and end of the segment you want to repeat.

What does the comparison show?

It draws the reference segment and your recording as waveforms, with each one’s pitch contour on top, so you can compare timing and intonation.

Can I keep my recording?
