Why a clear conversion table helps

English requirements are quoted in whatever system the institution prefers — a university might ask for IELTS 6.5, an employer for CEFR B2, an app for a Duolingo score. They measure the same underlying ability, but the numbers look nothing alike, so learners constantly have to translate between them. This converter lines up all five systems against the CEFR framework, the common European reference that ties them together, so one score instantly tells you where you stand everywhere else. The IELTS calculator adds the one piece of arithmetic test-takers most often get wrong: the overall band is not a plain average, but the average rounded to the nearest half-band.

Frequently asked questions

How exact are the conversions?

The tables are based on the official concordances published by the test makers and the CEFR framework. They are accurate as bands, but tests measure slightly different things, so treat the result as a close equivalent, not an exact swap.

How is the IELTS overall band calculated?

It is the average of your four sub-scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. A .25 average rounds up to the next half-band and a .75 average rounds up to the next whole band — the official IELTS rule.

What is the CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference describes language ability on a six-level scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). Most other tests publish how their scores map onto it.

Why do A1 and A2 show no IELTS or TOEFL score?

IELTS and TOEFL iBT are aimed at intermediate level and above, so their scales effectively start around B1. A genuine beginner would simply score at the bottom of the range.

Can I use this for a university application?

Use it to understand roughly where you stand, but always check the exact score an institution requires — admissions offices state their own thresholds.
