Frequently Asked Questions

Why are AV1 and H.265 not in the Custom builder?

Browsers can decode AV1 and HEVC in many cases but cannot encode either via MediaRecorder. To get AV1/HEVC samples, use the curated codec-sample-pack — those files are pre-encoded with FFmpeg and served directly.

Why is the custom output so much larger than a real encoded MP4?

MediaRecorder uses real-time encoding with default presets — bitrate is high relative to scene complexity. For tightly-controlled production samples use FFmpeg locally. The custom output is meant for upload-flow and pipeline tests, not as a quality reference.

Why is the curated MP4 always H.264 and not HEVC/AV1?

H.264 plays on every browser, every TV, every phone made in the last decade. HEVC and AV1 samples are in the codec-sample-pack tool — compatibility there is the entire point of that tool, so separating it keeps each tool focused.

Is there any way to set bitrate or quality on the Custom builder?

Not via the MediaRecorder API surface we use here — browsers pick the bitrate based on resolution and frame rate. For bitrate-controlled output use any video compressor / re-encoder tool on Timbrica or FFmpeg locally.
