Frequently asked questions

How is this different from email or cloud storage?

Email and cloud services upload your file to a server and the recipient downloads it from there. This tool opens a direct WebRTC connection between the two browsers — there is no server-side copy of the file.

Is the transfer encrypted?

Yes. WebRTC DataChannels use DTLS encryption by default, so the bytes are unreadable to any network operator, our signaling server, or our TURN relay if one is needed.

Can both devices send files at the same time?

Yes. The connection is full-duplex, and each side has its own queue. You can drop files on either side and they will travel in both directions concurrently.

What about huge files or whole folders?

Folders are sent file-by-file with the structure preserved on the receiver's disk via the File System Access API on Chrome / Edge. Other browsers fall back to per-file downloads. There is no fixed size limit, only your local disk space.

What if the connection drops?

The receiver remembers a bitmap of received chunks in IndexedDB. When you reconnect to the same room, the sender picks up from the next missing chunk. After a full page reload the sender may need to re-pick the same file from disk.

Does this work on mobile?

Yes — Chrome and Safari on iOS and Android both support WebRTC DataChannels. Keep the screen on while a transfer is running, since some mobile browsers freeze background tabs.

When does the "via Timbrica relay" label appear?

When a strict NAT or firewall blocks a direct peer-to-peer connection, the browsers fall back to relaying through our TURN server. Data stays DTLS-encrypted; we only see the encrypted bytes.

How long does the room code stay alive?

Until you close the tab on the sending device. Codes are not stored on the server — once both tabs are gone the code is freed for reuse.
