How to focus a projector

Pick the Fine Grid pattern

Open the grid in fullscreen. Coarse-focus until the diagonal lines are clearly visible.

Switch to Corner Crosshairs

Walk to each corner and look at the dense local grid — adjust focus to a compromise that minimises edge softness.

Lock with Siemens Star

The star reveals the absolute focus point at the centre. Lines should be sharp all the way to a tiny circle in the middle.

Verify with Text

The 8–64px text confirms that text is legible at all sizes — a good projector resolves at least the 12px line.

FAQ

Why are corners blurry even when the centre is sharp?

Cheap optics, throw too long for the lens range, or excessive digital keystone correction. Try moving the projector slightly so you minimise keystone, or use lens shift instead. Some projectors physically cannot resolve corners as well as the centre — find a focus that splits the difference.

What is a Siemens star?

A radial pattern of alternating black-and-white sectors that converge to a point. At the convergence point, lines pack together infinitely fine — when focus is correct, the star resolves down to a tiny clean dot. Out-of-focus = blurry grey patch in the middle.

Should I use Auto Focus on my projector?

Auto-focus is convenient but rarely as sharp as manual. Auto-focus optimises the centre; you may end up with soft corners. Run this test, manually adjust, and you will usually beat the auto result.
